I Went a Week Without YouTube

My routine had been from sun up to sun down I was watching something, anything really on YouTube. I've shared videos on YouTube. I know that space well. Suddenly, I knew I needed to delete my streaming apps like YouTube, Prime Video, Netflix, and others from my iphone. I needed space to be with God.

Technically though, I didn't really delete my YouTube app. That was how I was going to listen to worship music, pretty much non-stop for the next week. But, it was on my other channel that doesn't have the usual click-bait material I consumed for hours a day. Also, technically, it has been for over a week, nearly two now.

A few reasons convinced me I needed to do this. The first one: peace. In fact, I called my worship music playlist, "Peace". I was looking for and needing peace. I thought to myself, "Worship music has to help". I had also heard from a couple ladies that they don't listen to the news or keep up, in order to preserve their peace of mind.

Another reason was to check my heart to make sure I was going to God, rather than to people for whatever I was longing for and needing. It's so easy to quiet our minds by opening up an app when we don't like the feelings and thoughts bubbling up inside of us. I was able to go to God more without all of the distractions.

Today, I saw someone share something that would ordinarily have me taking some time in my day to upload a video on the topic for my YouTube channel, but today I feel different. Today my world is smaller. My time is measurable. I can fit in my day what I know is good for me. The things that disturbed me online don't seem to matter too much today, or at least they don't seem to "need" me to comment on them.

My friend, "Chata", recommended a show on Netflix, and I am going to watch it, but for the right reasons now. Not to escape, but to enjoy a bit of time for myself. I hope you make space for God in your life too if you feel that same longing that I did over a week now. He'll definitely meet you there.
